Overview

The underhand serve is a serve in which the ball is struck with an underarm or underhand motion rather than an overhand motion. It is used less commonly in competitive play but appears in recreational tennis, as a tactical variation, or when a player has limitations that make the overhand serve difficult. The motion typically involves a shorter wind-up, lower toss, and a swing path that contacts the ball below shoulder height, with less reliance on the full kinetic chain used in the overhand serve.
