# Open-Side Displacement (Normalized)

> Open-side body displacement between ball contact and finish, expressed as a multiple of athlete height.

## Technical Details

* **Variable Type:** Discrete Metric
* **Data Type:** Float
* **Units:** × height (ratio to athlete height)
* **Column Name:** `displacement_open_side`
* **Measurement:** Open-side (lateral, non-dominant side) body displacement between [Apex](/biomechanics/activities/tennis/events/apex) (ball contact) and [Termination](/biomechanics/activities/tennis/events/termination), divided by athlete height

## Description

Open-side displacement (normalized) measures how far the body drifts laterally toward the non-dominant (open) side between ball contact and the finish of the serve, expressed as a multiple of the athlete's height. It provides the underlying continuous measurement behind the [Landing Phase Excessive Side Drift](/biomechanics/activities/tennis/flags/landing-phase-excessive-side-drift) movement flag, which flags displacement greater than 0.30x height (or less than -0.10x height).

## Use Cases

* Lateral stability analysis
* Related to Landing Phase Excessive Side Drift flag
* Balance and follow-through assessment
