# Wrists Pass Ankles

> Whether the wrists move beyond the ankles at maximum wrist height during the SFMA squat, and their distance.

## Technical Details

* **Variable Type:** Discrete Metric
* **Data Type:** Boolean (binary) for pass; Float for distance
* **Units:** 1 = yes, 0 = no (binary); meters (m) for distance
* **Column Name:** `sfma_squat_wrists_pass_ankles` (binary); distance column may be implementation-specific
* **Aggregation:** rate
* **Precision:** 0
* **Optimal Direction:** Higher is better
* **Measurement:** Whether the wrists move beyond the ankles at maximum wrist height during the SFMA squat; optionally the distance between wrists and ankles

## Description

Wrists pass ankles is specific to the SFMA squat. At the bottom, the athlete swings the arms down and back; this metric indicates whether the wrists reach or pass the ankles. It is used together with [Hips Pass Knees](/biomechanics/activities/squat/metrics/hip-below-knee) to determine [Functional](/biomechanics/activities/squat/metrics/sfma-functional) classification.

## Use Cases

* SFMA squat mobility and movement quality
* Functional classification (with hips pass knees)
* Upper-quarter and trunk mobility screening
