# Functional (SFMA)

> Binary indicator of whether the SFMA squat is classified as functional (1) or not (0) based on hips pass knees and wrists pass ankles.

## Technical Details

* **Variable Type:** Discrete Metric
* **Data Type:** Boolean (binary)
* **Units:** 1 = functional, 0 = not functional
* **Column Name:** `sfma_squat_functional`
* **Aggregation:** rate
* **Precision:** 0
* **Optimal Direction:** Higher is better
* **Measurement:** Composite classification: movement is functional if both [Hips Pass Knees](/biomechanics/activities/squat/metrics/hip-below-knee) and [Wrists Pass Ankles](/biomechanics/activities/squat/metrics/wrists-pass-ankles) are achieved

## Description

Functional is an SFMA squat–specific metric that summarizes whether the movement meets the criteria for a "functional" squat: hips pass knees and wrists pass ankles. It is derived from the binary metrics for those two criteria and is used in clinical and screening contexts.

## Use Cases

* SFMA movement classification
* Screening and outcome tracking
* Clinical decision support
