Technical Details

  • Variable Type: Discrete Metric
  • Data Type: Float
  • Units: ratio (0–1)
  • Column Name: Varies by phase and squat type
  • Measurement: Relative contribution of hip vs. knee motion during the specified phase

Events / Phases

This metric can be reported for different phases depending on squat type:
  • Eccentric: From Initiation to Bottom.
    • Column examples: eccentric_hip_knee_dominance (bodyweight, overhead); left_eccentric_hip_knee_dominance, right_eccentric_hip_knee_dominance (single leg).
  • Concentric: From Ascent Start to End.
    • Column examples: concentric_hip_knee_dominance (bodyweight, overhead); left_concentric_hip_knee_dominance, right_concentric_hip_knee_dominance (single leg).

Description

Hip knee dominance describes how much the athlete uses the hip versus the knee during the eccentric or concentric phase of the squat. A value of 0 indicates hip-dominant strategy; 1 indicates knee-dominant. Single-leg squats report left/right-specific columns for each phase.

Use Cases

  • Movement strategy and injury risk (e.g., knee-dominant loading)
  • Coaching and technique feedback
  • Bilateral or single-leg comparison across phases
