Technical Details
- Variable Type: Discrete Metric
- Data Type: Float
- Units: ratio (0–1)
- Column Name: Varies by phase and squat type
- Measurement: Relative contribution of hip vs. knee motion during the specified phase
Events / Phases
This metric can be reported for different phases depending on squat type:- Eccentric: From Initiation to Bottom.
- Column examples:
eccentric_hip_knee_dominance(bodyweight, overhead);left_eccentric_hip_knee_dominance,right_eccentric_hip_knee_dominance(single leg).
- Column examples:
- Concentric: From Ascent Start to End.
- Column examples:
concentric_hip_knee_dominance(bodyweight, overhead);left_concentric_hip_knee_dominance,right_concentric_hip_knee_dominance(single leg).

Description
Hip knee dominance describes how much the athlete uses the hip versus the knee during the eccentric or concentric phase of the squat. A value of 0 indicates hip-dominant strategy; 1 indicates knee-dominant. Single-leg squats report left/right-specific columns for each phase.Use Cases
- Movement strategy and injury risk (e.g., knee-dominant loading)
- Coaching and technique feedback
- Bilateral or single-leg comparison across phases
