Technical Details

  • Variable Type: Discrete Metric
  • Data Type: Boolean (binary) for pass/below, float for distance
  • Units: 1 = yes, 0 = no (binary); meters (m) for distance
  • Column Name: Varies by squat type (see below)
  • Measurement:
    • Whether the hip joint centers reache below the knee joint centers at maximum depth
    • Distance between hip and knee at bottom,
      • positive (+) values indicate hip distance BELOW knees
      • negative (-) values indicate hip distance ABOVE knees

Events / Phases

  • Bodyweight / Overhead:
    • Vertical Hip Lower Than Vertical Knee — binary: hip_below_knee
    • distance: hip_below_knee_distance
  • SFMA:
    • Hips Pass Knees — binary: sfma_squat_hips_pass_knees
    • distance column may be implementation-specific (e.g., distance between hips and knees at maximum hip depth)

Description

This metric indicates whether the athlete achieves sufficient depth such that the hips go below the level of the knees. The distance variant quantifies how far the hip is relative to the knee at bottom. Used in bodyweight, overhead, and SFMA squats.

Use Cases

  • Depth and range of motion (e.g., “hips below knees” standard)
  • SFMA movement quality and functional classification
  • Screening and normative comparison
