# range_of_motion-ankle_flexion

> Biomechanical analysis of ankle dorsiflexion range of motion assessment, including measurement positions and discrete metrics.

## Overview

The ankle dorsiflexion assessment evaluates the range of motion and quality of movement in the ankle joint. This assessment can be performed in either a standing or half-kneel position, and measures the ability to achieve sufficient dorsiflexion while maintaining proper alignment.

## Instructions

**Standing**: With one foot in front of the other, keep your back foot flat on the ground and bend your back knee, pushing your shin towards the ground.
Hold for \~1 second.

**Half-kneeling**: Place one knee on the ground below you and the other leg in front of you with your foot flat on the ground.
Shift your weight forward, pushing your front shin towards the ground and keeping your front foot fully in contact with the ground.
Hold for \~1 second.

## Dimensions

Required inputs for processing:

* **Footedness**: the side *('left', 'right')* of the ankle being tested *(standing: back, half-kneeling: front)*

## Generic Outputs

Every capture includes session metadata, standard joint angle/velocity time series, and 3D keypoint positions common to all movements. See [Generic Outputs](/biomechanics/activities/generic_outputs) for the full list.

## Discrete Metrics

| Metric | Units | Description | Column Names |
| ---------------------- | ------- | ------------------------------------------------ | ----------------------------------- |
| AssessmentPosition | - | Assessment position ('standing' or 'half-kneel') | \`\` |
| Footedness | - | Which foot is being tested ('left' or 'right') | \`\` |
| MaxFlexion | Degrees | Maximum dorsiflexion angle | `range_of_motion_max_ankle_flexion` |
| Excursion | Degrees | Total range of motion | \`\` |
| SufficientFlexion | - | Whether flexion is sufficient (≥ 30°) | `sufficient_ankle_flexion` |
| BackKneePassFrontAnkle | - | Whether back knee passes front ankle | \`\` |

## Notes

* Assessment position is determined by knee and hip angles (threshold of 80°)
* Footedness is determined by hip angle patterns
* Sufficient dorsiflexion is defined as ≥ 30°
* Kinematic data typically captured at 30 or 60 Hz for range-of-motion activities
