Technical Details

  • Variable Type: Discrete Metric
  • Data Type: Float
  • Units: degrees
  • Column Name: Varies by plane (see Axes Orientation); left/right reported separately
  • Measurement: Shank segment angle in the specified plane (sagittal, frontal, or twist) relative to global reference

Axes Orientation

This metric is reported for the shank segment in three planes. Column names follow the pattern left_shank_angle_global_*, right_shank_angle_global_*. The plane (and side) determines which column applies:
  • Sagittal: Anterior–posterior or forward-backward angles, like a somersault
    • Column examples: left_shank_angle_global_sagittal, right_shank_angle_global_sagittal.
  • Frontal: Medial–lateral or side-side angles, like a cartwheel
    • Column examples: left_shank_angle_global_frontal, right_shank_angle_global_frontal.
  • Twist (transverse): Twisting rotation like a tornado
    • Column examples: left_shank_angle_global_twist, right_shank_angle_global_twist.

Description

Shank angle WRT (with respect to) global describes the orientation of the shank (lower leg) segment in the global coordinate system. Sagittal, frontal, and twist components are reported separately. Used in some jump types (e.g., countermovement) for segment orientation and research. The plane (sagittal, frontal, twist) determines which column name applies.

Use Cases

  • Segment orientation and technique
  • Bilateral comparison
  • Research and detailed kinematics
