# Knee Valgus

> Medial (inward) knee displacement at a specific event or over a phase during the jump.

## Events / Phases

This metric can be reported at different events or phases depending on jump type:

* **At Bottom:** At the [Bottom](/biomechanics/activities/jump/events/bottom) event (lowest pelvis before the jump).
  * Column examples: `right_knee_valgus_at_bottom`, `left_knee_valgus_at_bottom`.
* **At Landing:** At the [Landing](/biomechanics/activities/jump/events/landing) event (first ground contact after flight).
  * Column examples: `right_knee_valgus_at_landing`, `left_knee_valgus_at_landing`.
* **At Landing Bottom:** At the [Landing Bottom](/biomechanics/activities/jump/events/landing-bottom) event (deepest absorption after landing).
  * Column examples: `right_knee_valgus_at_landing_bottom`, `left_knee_valgus_at_landing_bottom`.
* **Landing Full (max during landing phase):** Maximum valgus from [Landing](/biomechanics/activities/jump/events/landing) to [Termination](/biomechanics/activities/jump/events/termination).

## Description

Knee valgus measures the amount of medial (inward) knee motion at or between specific time points during the jump.
Excessive knee valgus motion (lower than 0.05 m or about 2 inches) is associated with increased injury risk and suboptimal loading.

Knee valgus is reported separately for left and right in bilateral jumps; single-leg jumps may report one side.
The event or phase determines which column name applies.
